The dbt certification exam format

The numbers

Every scored question carries one point and they are weighted equally, so there is no strategic reason to spend longer on a hard one than the clock justifies. The exam also mixes in unscored research questions that are not identified, which means you cannot safely dismiss a question as “probably one of the experimental ones”.

The six question formats

This is where the dbt exam differs most from what people practise on. The study guide lists six formats, and a question pack that only contains multiple choice has prepared you for one of them.

• Multiple choiceOne correct option among four or five. The bulk of the exam, and the format every prep resource already covers.
• Fill in the blankType the missing flag, key or command. No options to eliminate, which makes it unforgiving.
• MatchingPair each item on the left with the right one on the right. The right-hand column usually holds more options than you need.
• HotspotClick the region of a code or YAML block that answers the question — the failing line, the misplaced key.
• Build listAssemble the correct steps in the correct order from a pool that contains steps you should leave out.
• Discrete option (DOMC)Options appear one at a time, in random order, and you answer YES or NO to each. Options stop appearing once your answer has decided the outcome — so you may never see them all, and you cannot go back and compare. This is the format almost nobody else replicates.

How DOMC changes the way you answer

Every multiple-choice tactic you have built up over a lifetime of tests — scan the options, eliminate the obvious wrong ones, pick the one that sounds like the textbook — is unavailable on DOMC. That is the point of it, and it is why rehearsing the format matters more than knowing more facts.

Discrete Option Multiple Choice is worth understanding before you sit down, because the tactics you have built up over a lifetime of multiple-choice tests do not work on it. There is no scanning the options to find the one that looks most like the textbook phrasing, and no elimination — you are shown a single statement and asked whether it is true, then possibly another, until your answers have settled the question.

Two consequences follow from the vendor’s own description of the mechanic. Options stop appearing once the outcome is decided, so finishing an item quickly tells you nothing about whether you got it right. And the options are drawn per candidate from a larger pool, so two people sitting the same exam may not see the same statements. The only preparation that works is knowing whether each individual claim is true.

Our simulator implements the mechanic properly — one option at a time, random order, and the item ends the moment the outcome is decided — rather than showing you a checklist and calling it DOMC.

What the format mix probably looks like

dbt Labs does not publish how many questions of each format appear, and there is a good reason to think a fixed answer may not exist: the delivery engine draws a presentation set per candidate, so the mix can vary between sittings.

The distribution below is what our own 65-question forms use. It is an estimate, built as a floor for format fidelity rather than a claim about the real exam, and we would rather label it than let you assume it came from dbt Labs.

What the seven topics are

The official outline names seven topics. The share of the exam each one takes is, again, our estimate — dbt Labs publishes no weights — derived from how many subtopics the outline gives each one.

How exam day runs

From the vendors’ published candidate documentation, expect a check-in sequence before the exam opens: consent to face capture and session recording, a photo-ID check, camera and microphone permissions, sharing your entire screen, and a guided scan of the room using a second device. Keep a charged phone and a photo ID within reach.

The timer counts down in the corner and can generally be hidden if watching it makes things worse — the clock keeps running either way — and the assessment is submitted automatically when it reaches zero, with everything you have answered saved.

One honest caveat: dbt Labs’ guide lists Caveon browsers as supported while scheduling runs through Talview, so the exam player and the proctoring shell appear to come from two different vendors. The check-in details above are drawn from published candidate documentation, and small differences on the day would not surprise us.

How many questions are on the dbt certification exam?

65 questions in 120 minutes. Every scored question is worth one point and they are all weighted equally. The exam also includes unscored research questions, and they are not marked as such, so you cannot tell which ones do not count.

What is the passing score for the dbt Analytics Engineering exam?

65%. With 65 questions and equal weighting, that works out to roughly 43 correct — though the unscored research questions mean the arithmetic is not exactly that clean.
